Traumatic injuries to the ankle result in sprains and fractures. Some fractures require insertion of fixation (screws and plates) to maintain a solid bone for adequate healing to occur. If the joint (i.e. the foot portion) is pushed outside its normal boundries, surgery is performed to correct the poor position that the joint is in. Even a few millimeters has been shown to cause long term damage and can lead to degeneration of the protective cartilage in the ankle joint. In those instances surgery is recommended for correction.
Ankle Fracture with dislocation
Pre-operative ankle fracture with dislocation
Post-operative result
This patient had an ankle fracture with dislocation. This is a severe injury requiring surgery to realign the ankle bones as well as place the foot back under the leg. After surgery the bones should have a smooth outline indicating anatomical realignment.
